Hello, I got Keyman 60 as part of the Speech Tools shareware package from SIL. I need it for typing phonetic symbols. After installing it, I downloaded the SIL IPA 93 keyboard from your website, and according to Keyman configuration, it's installed. But when I click on the Keyman icon in the task bar, only "no Keyman keyboard" shows up. How do I get Keyman to activate the IPA keyboard?

Thanks!

Start Keyman Configuration, and make sure the IPA keyboard is ticked. Click OK to close Keyman Configuration, not Cancel (even if the IPA keyboard is already ticked). Let me know if that doesn't fix the problem!

I thought I had the problem fixed by rebooting the computer. That worked on one computer, but I tried the same thing on my laptop and now the IPA keyboard shows up as an option but when I click on it, it doesn't get activated (i.e. the K doesn't change to the N symbol, and it continues to say "No Keyman keyboard"). Needless to say, the symbols don't show up right when I try to type them.

It sounds like there is a conflict with another utility application on the system. Some poorly written utility applications can conflict with Keyman 6.0 because they don't follow Microsoft's standards and requirements. Version 6.2.183.0 and version 7.0 of Keyman Desktop both include special code to detect these applications and work around the issue. However, version 6.0 does not include this code. I recommend upgrading to 6.2 (available to licenced users of version 6, 6.1 and 6.2) or 7.0 (trial version downloadable from http://www.tavultesoft.com/70/download.php).

An alternative is to review the utility applications running on your system to try and find the one that is conflicting. There are various system information tools available that will show you a list of applications that start with Windows. One that comes with windows is "msconfig". To access msconfig, click Start Menu, Run, type "msconfig" and press Enter. Look at the Startup tab to see the list of programs that start with Windows.

When I installed Keyman I didn't tell it to start with Windows. Should I have? I'm finding that sometimes I have to turn Keyman on and off a few times in order for its keyboard to remain active when I click on the window of the application I'm using.

No, it usually makes no difference whether or not you tell Keyman to start with Windows, when there is another application that conflicts.

Did you try the upgraded version of Keyman?
