Now this is odd.
If I select text by clicking in the text then dragging the mouse to the right and down, Copy & Cut are not available; neither by Ctrl+c or Ctrl+x, nor from the Edit menu.
However, if I select text by clicking in the text then dragging the mouse to the left and up, Copy & Cut function as usual. Double clicking also works correctly.
